Our mission
The music library of the Flemish Radio Orchestra and Flemish Radio
Choir is responsible for the delivery of the music material for all
productions of both the Flemish Radio Orchestra as the Flemish Radio
Choir.
What does it contain?
With a collection of around 80,000 musical works, the music library
of the Flemish Radio Orchestra and Flemish Radio Choir conceals immense
musical treasure.
As the collection consists of both scores and the associated parts, all
of the material is immediately usable for orchestra, instrumental
ensemble or choir. The works are the actual performance sets for
ensembles. In other words, as well as the orchestral score of the work
in question, you will also find all the published parts for individual
instruments. Such an extensive collection of performance sets makes
this library unique in Belgium.
For orchestra
All genres and styles for orchestra are abundantly represented in
the music library: the great symphonic oeuvre, operas, oratorios, solo
concertos, suites and so on, but also music for smaller ensembles, for
chamber orchestra, for quartets, duos and solo works. The music
library’s importance is further enhanced by the presence of a great
many unique autographs and manuscripts of music by Belgian composers.
This is attractively reflected in the book recently issued by the
Leuven University Press entitled 'Het geheugen van de geluidsfabriek',
which is the result of thorough research into the history of the music
library , its roots and its collection.
As far as music for big band and jazz orchestra is concerned, the
library’s collection makes it unique in Belgium. The extensive
collection has developed from productions with the TV Orchestra
(conducted by Francis Bay), the Radio Dance Orchestra and the Jazz
Orchestra (conducted by Etienne Verschueren), the Combo (conducted by
Al Van Dam), the BRT Combo (conducted by Tony Bauwens) and the Big Band
(conducted by Freddy Sunder). The collection contains compositions and
arrangements by numerous renowned Belgian and foreign conductors and
arrangers, including S. Hampton, J. Milan, S. Nestico, J. Evans, F.
Engelen, J. Van Rooyen, J. Wroblewski, J. Warland and B. Porter, making
it a musical reflection of a memorable period in public broadcasting.
For choir
The collection for choir consists of around 26,000 works, and is still growing fast. As is the case with the orchestral works, here too we find in addition to the classical choral repertoire an extensive collection of Belgian composers and a marked emphasis on the contemporary choral repertoire. Thanks to this, the collection provides a good picture of recent developments in choral music and the great wealth of music for contemporary choirs. The collection for choir consists of around 26,000 works, and is still growing fast.
