The folksong L’Homme Armé was an important source of inspiration for many musical settings in the Renaissance. Guillaume Dufay was one of the first composers to use that melody as the basis for a Mass. Besides the melody, the theme – fear the armed man! – also evokes an immediate association with war. What was once the battle cry of every crusader who set off to fight the Ottoman Empire today bears a universal message of burning relevance. At least as inspiring is the counterpart to that slogan: the call for peace, another beloved theme throughout the history of music.
