The International Film festival of Flanders - Ghent was founded in 1974 and has since then developed into one of the most prominent European film events. Starting in 2001, the Ghent Film Festival has also been organizing the World Soundtrack Awards, the most prestigious film music prizes in the world.

With this focus on film music, and with the partnership of the Brussels Philharmonic, the festival has carved out a unique place among the many thousands of film festivals in the world. In 2007 the leading American film magazine Variety ranked the Ghent Film Festival among the 50 festivals worldwide that must not be missed. The Wall Street Journal also ranked Ghent, after Cannes, Venice and Berlin, among the top five European film festivals.

Dirk Brossé, conductor
