In  Les Pêcheurs de perlesThe Pearl Fishers, the vow of friendship between two friends, Zurga and Nadir, is shattered by their shared love for the priestess Leïla, leading to tragic consequences. Although criticized at the time of its premiere in 1863, the opera already showcases the composer's signature style. 

The composer's inherently lyrical nature and his ability to evoke settings, landscapes, and customs blend seamlessly with his skill in handling atmosphere, timbre, and harmony. Berlioz celebrated the work, praising "a considerable number of beautiful, expressive passages full of fire and rich coloring." Later, another admirer would laud the quality of his orchestration: Johannes Brahms.
