Pietà: explanation
The Pietà, a classic motif in Christian art, depicts the Virgin Mary in a sober manner, with her arms cradling the lifeless body of her adult son, Jesus, in her lap. Few images are more heart-wrenching than that of a parent mourning a deceased child. No wonder, then, that this theme has inspired countless composers, from the Flemish Polyphonists to Arvo Pärt. In this programme, the Flemish Radio Choir pays tribute to Mary and the unconditional love she symbolises. Featuring works that celebrate the divine mother figure or give voice to the longing for her comfort.
