Since 2008 Karel Steylaerts has been Principal Cello with the Brussels Philharmonic.

He studied the cello at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels with Carlo Schmitz and at the Hochschule fur Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Cologne with Maria Kliegel.

Soon after that he won the Tenuto competition.

​He was a member of the Trondlin Pianoforte Trio with whom he performed at many national and international festivals. The many CD’s they have recorded have received worldwide acclaim in the press.

Karel Steylaerts also teaches cello at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles.

In 2006, together with Shirly Laub (violin) and Tony Nys (viola), Karel founded the TrioFenix to bring the seldom-played repertoire for string trios to a wider public through concert performances.
