Verdi's Requiem is on a par with Mozart's: written by a genius (according to Johannes Brahms), overwhelmingly grand and yet surprisingly intimate, with the whole range of human emotions passing in review.
From the Dies Irae, which descends ominously, to the achingly beautiful Requiem Aeternam: the scale and scope are immense, the emotional expression breathtakingly broad. And despite the liturgical format, Verdi managed to make the two great themes of each requiem - fear and hope - tangible and accessible, for believers and non-believers alike.
