Explanation: Via Crucis

In 2016, the American chamber choir The Crossing commissioned seven leading composers to create contemporary counterparts to the cantatas from Buxtehude’s poignant cycle *Membra Jesu Nostri*. These compositions approached the suffering of Christ – and, by extension, that of humanity – from a new and humanist perspective. The Flemish Radio Choir takes this story even further, examining the subject from a female perspective. From the weeping Mary at the cross to the struggling or caring women of today. Across fourteen movements – the same number as the Stations of the Cross – a musical tapestry unfolds, like a warm balm for the tormented soul.
