Vlaams Radiokoor cancels all concerts until the end of May.

The recent evolutions and decisions by the authorities both in Germany and in Belgium intended to limit the further spread of the coronavirus as much as possible, necessitate the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaams Radiokoor to suspend the planned rehearsals and concerts until 9 April (UPDATE 25.04.2020 until the end of this season) inclusive. After the concert of tonight the orchestra and choir were supposed to start preparing for an expanded tour in Germany, with associated concerts at home. In the current situation, the safety of everyone involved in the tour and concerts could not be guaranteed.

“Given the recent events entirely beyond our will and control, the Brussels Philharmonic finds itself obliged to acknowledge the consequences of the damage that the Covid-19 virus is causing around the world.” says Gunther Broucke, the general manager.

“This epidemic, which has now been officially defined as a pandemic, is the reason for the necessary suspension of all our activities with immediate effect until 9 April inclusive.”

The health of the musicians, staff (both our own and those of the various partners and concert halls) and the audience take absolute priority. In this situation of force majeure, we cannot but take on our full responsibility, which means responding to the call to show solidarity and adjust our behaviour to prevent further spread of the virus as much as possible.

Baron Hugo Vandamme, chair of the board of directors of the Brussels Philharmonic: “It is our duty not only to guarantee the health and well-being of our musicians and other staff members, which is not possible if we continue our activities, but also to show civic solidarity and to follow the instructions that the local and regional authorities in Belgium are currently drawing up and continually adjusting/strengthening.”

All ticketholders for the concerts in question will be contacted immediately by the respective organisers. More information will follow on our websites.
