together with the Flemish Radio Choir, you'll dive into Schubert's music: what does this composer mean to you?
"Schubert in three words: fluid, sensitive, profound. Schubert is all about melancholy and depth. The deepest emotional stirrings are unearthed in the most beautiful melodies - directly touching the heart. Franz Schubert's life was short and intense: not everyone believed in his talent. He also had a troubled relationship with his father, which is reflected in his music.
Everyone knows Schubert for his beautiful songs, sensual chamber music, and lyrical symphonies. His choral music tends to be overshadowed by his more famous and larger works, so I'm looking forward to highlighting his choral music in these Studio 1 Sessions."
As a conductor, you find yourself in various places and situations. Is there a funny or embarrassing moment that you will always remember?
"My girlfriend and I had just started dating when I invited her to a concert where I was working as a repetiteur and assistant to the conductor. I had left a ticket for her at the ticket office under my name. After the concert, I went to look for her but she was nowhere to be found. At that moment, she sent me messages about how moved she was and how proud of me she was. It turned out she had accidentally attended another concert. She there received a free ticket as 'the conductor's girlfriend.'"
If your life had a theme song, what would it be?
"When You Believe by Mariah Carey - a beautiful song I used to listen to often. Believing in myself has not always been easy. That's probably why I understand the importance of faith and trust, which is crucial when leading a choir and training young musicians."
A running joke among musicians is that they resemble their instruments. What instrument would you be?
"I play the trumpet, but based on my appearance, I could see myself as a flute. Tall, slim, and somewhat fragile."
What's your guilty pleasure song?
"My ladies' choir, Amaranthe, and I once had the opportunity to sing during a wedding ceremony. I arranged 'de Nobelprijs' by Clouseau for the occasion: it was a bit cheesy, but it worked well, and I really enjoyed it!"
Enough about music! Do you have non-musical passions?
"I love cooking, traveling, and crafting."
If you could have a drink with anyone, who would it be?
"With Stefan Hertmans. I was fortunate to have him as a teacher during my training at the Conservatory of Ghent. I've already sat at the same table with him during an oral exam! I would love to do it again, under more relaxed circumstances."
What recharges your batteries?
"Being at home with the family. Creating something fun, cooking a good meal, and visiting more family or friends."
I'm going on a trip, and I'm taking ...
"A Swiss Army knife. Endlessly versatile!"
