Starting with the 19-20 season, Bart Van Reyn will take over as music director of the Vlaams Radiokoor. As a young Flemish conductor, Bart has had an interesting career path both at home and abroad that has not gone unnoticed. A shared passion for contemporary repertoire, the belief that the voice is the ultimate interpreter of our emotions, and the commitment to make our vocal heritage accessible to singers and audiences alike are what binds the ensemble together. This week, the audience gets a preview of this brand new alliance, with the concert series Tournée Vocale that is lead by Bart and starts tonight in Leuven.

“My appointment as music director feels like coming home: over the last 15 years I have regularly been invited by the Vlaams Radiokoor as guest conductor, and I am delighted to now also take part in the outlining of the choir's larger path.”
- bart van reyn, music director vlaams radiokoor

With Bart Van Reyn, the Vlaams Radiokoor has appointed a music director who will not only conduct his own productions, but will dedicate himself to shaping the complete vocal identity of the choir. "We will focus even more on intricate a capella productions under the label Vocal Fabric, and besides a remaining focus on music of our time the programming will include more baroque, in collaboration with the ensemble Il Gardellino," says Van Reyn. For their first Vocal Fabric series - rien à voir (september 2019) - conductor and choir will work together with Karl Meesters, who organises memorable concert experiences where the sound, acoustics and performance are of the
highest quality, thus raising awareness and support for the blind and visually impaired.

As music director, Bart Van Reyn will be closely involved with the casting and preparation of the choir for productions with other ensembles at home and abroad. He will also take under his wing the Radiokoor Atelier, a living portal for repertoire, knowledge, experience and voices, making our vocal heritage accessible to singers and audiences alike, and investing in the creation of new vocal work.

“Bart's clear vision on repertoire and great passion for the métier make him the ideal match for the new Vlaams Radiokoor. Together we will work today on the history of tomorrow, as guardians of our rich vocal heritage.”
- alain de ley, artistic administrator vlaams radiokoor

"The 32 singers of the Vlaams Radiokoor have a special gift to rapidly adapt to each musical style, which is necessary when one considers the variety in repertoire each season. I look forward to expanding the excellent reputation of the Vlaams Radiokoor on the national and international stages even further."

Van Reyn succeeds Hervé Niquet, who has carefully shaped and polished the typical 'sound' of the Vlaams Radiokoor since his appointment in 2011. Van Reyn is founder of Octopus, a chamber choir and a symphony chorus, and of Le Concert d’Anvers, a period instrument orchestra with a focus on 18th and early 19th century repertoire. More recently he co-founded the touring opera company The Ministry of Operatic Affairs. He remains music director of the Danish National Choir, where he has held the directorship since 2016.
